what are we looking for?

We are seeking an LGV Driver Manager to be responsible for the day-to-day management of our HGV drivers and vehicles.

This hands-on position rotates between early and late shifts and requires strong leadership, operational understanding, and a proactive approach to compliance, fleet standards, and performance management.

The role plays a key part in supporting delivery excellence, cost control, driver performance, and continuous improvement, while also assisting with daily route planning and fleet scheduling.

Early shifts are Monday to Friday, 5.00am to 2.30pm, and late shifts are 10.30am to 20:00pm.

what will you be doing?

Your responsibilities will be:

Driver & Operational Management

  • Supervise and support our team of up to approximately 12 HGV drivers and vehicles.
  • Monitor attendance, timekeeping, and driver welfare; escalate concerns promptly.
  • Manage HGV driver holiday planning and cover to ensure service continuity.
  • Assist in maintaining fleet accreditations (e.g., FORS) and other audit requirements.
  • Deliver regular toolbox talks and safety-led driver training in line with operational updates.
  • Conduct performance reviews, address conduct/attendance matters, and lead disciplinary or grievance proceedings.
  • Manage driver performance to ensure OTIF (On-Time-In-Full) targets are met; regularly review recurring delivery/collection issues and ensure corrective actions are implemented.

Compliance & Safety

  • Lead first-line investigations into road traffic incidents, accidents, and PCNs.
  • Ensure full compliance with Driver Hours regulations, Working Time Directive, and tachograph legislation.
  • Perform regular digital tachograph downloads, analysis, and compliance reporting.
  • Enforce correct load security practices in accordance with legal and company policies.

Fleet & Maintenance Oversight

  • Coordinate with the fleet team to schedule timely vehicle servicing, MOTs, and inspections.
  • Support minor vehicle fault repairs and initial triage before escalation.
  • Maintain accurate defect records and ensure all drivers complete daily vehicle checks.

Scheduling & Resource Management

  • Work closely with the scheduling team to ensure efficient route planning and driver allocation.
  • Assist with managing LGV route scheduling to improve efficiency and service quality.
  • Provide last-minute driver cover, including agency coordination and, if qualified, personal driving support.
  • Deploy courier resources to assist LGV routes where needed.

Cost & Efficiency Focus

  • Monitor and help manage agency and temporary driver usage within budget.
  • Proactively identify areas for process improvement, efficiency gains, or cost savings and raise recommendations accordingly.

what we would like to see:

  • Experience in proactive leadership with a strong background in LGV Operations, People Management and Transport Legislation.
  • A valid LGV (C or C+E) licence.
  • Experience in coaching drivers to meet performance and compliance standards.
  • Experience in supporting smooth operational delivery.
  • A high level of attention to detail alongside excellent safety awareness.
